The Aseemkala Initiative

The Aseemkala Initiative uses traditional and classical dances to explore and choreograph narratives of health, healing, illness in modern medicine beyond the self-imposed boundaries dividing arts and medicine. Through choreographic works expressing indigenous knowledge and culture intersecting with medicine, the Aseemkala Initiative hopes to empower communities to revive cultural knowledge and expand cultural limits in medicine.

Traditional artists are not promoted and protected as mainstream performers and are unable to access resources needed to fully expand their breadth of performance. Furthermore, traditional dances innately heal communities through food, community, music, performance, and observation. This initiative not only aims to promote traditional dances, but it also aims to remember the medicine that inherently exists in the diverse dance cultures around the world. It is about reconnecting the dancer-doctor, showing that despite many traditional languages of dance and the many manifestations of illness and medicine, the human body and experience is ancient, shared and celebrated.
